What is a Medicare Wellness Visit?

The Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) is a benefit covered in full by Medicare Part B for beneficiaries who have had Part B for more than 12 months. There's no copay, no deductible, and no out-of-pocket cost, as long as the visit stays focused on wellness and prevention.

The goal of the visit is simple: build (or update) a personalized prevention plan for the year ahead. We review your history, screen for the risks that matter most as you age, coordinate with your specialists, and make sure nothing is falling through the cracks.

Three types of Medicare wellness visits

  • Welcome to Medicare visit (IPPE): a one-time preventive visit available within the first 12 months of Part B enrollment.
  • Initial Annual Wellness Visit: your first AWV, performed after you've had Part B for more than 12 months.
  • Subsequent Annual Wellness Visits: repeated once every 12 months thereafter.

What's included

  • Health risk assessment and review of your medical and family history
  • Vital signs and a routine measurements update
  • Cognitive function screening for memory concerns
  • Depression and mood screening
  • Fall risk and home safety review
  • Medication and supplement review
  • Review of current screenings (colon, breast, lung, bone density, etc.)
  • A written, personalized prevention plan and screening schedule

AWV vs. annual physical, what's the difference?

The AWV is not a hands-on physical exam in the traditional sense. It's a planning visit. If you'd also like a comprehensive head-to-toe exam, blood work, or evaluation of specific symptoms, those can be added the same day as a separate service. Some patients also schedule an annual physical on the same visit; we'll let you know how that's billed.

Bring this to your AWV

  • A list of current medications and supplements (or the bottles)
  • Names and contact info for any specialists you see
  • Your Medicare card and any Medicare Advantage or supplement plan ID
  • Vaccination records if you have them

Living with chronic conditions?

The AWV pairs especially well with chronic disease management for diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart disease. We can also offer telehealth follow-ups between visits.
